This mortar is thrown from terracotta-toned stoneware and left unglazed inside, which gives the bowl a fine grip that breaks down rosemary, garlic and peppercorns quickly. The outside carries a soft satin glaze that wipes clean and looks at home on an open shelf.
We use it to bruise herbs for infused oils, grind cumin and coriander for raw taco meat, and pound lemongrass for a fresh curry paste. The weighted pestle does most of the work, so a few firm turns is all it takes. It is small enough to pass around the table for finishing salts.
